New -Healthy- Addictions

I am now addicted to the gym. The MS Society has gym access for us, and I finally signed up. It’s at the local YWCA and there are three times per week that we can go meet with the group and a trainer for strength training. There it also yoga, aquafit, and Tai Chi coming soon. This is my third (or is it forth..?) week going now and I FREAKING LOVE IT. I go to aquafit fit on Mondays and then strength training on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The hour just flies by. The people are all awesome. Plus, having free access to a personal trainer is kind of amazing. If you have a chronic illness, make sure to look for similar programs in your area. I wish I would have done this when I was first diagnosed.

Addiction number two: tracking macros. Instead of just tracking calories, I’m trying to keep track of macros (fat, protein, and carbs). There are a few different calculators out there to help you figure out what you should be consuming in a day. I used the one from Bodybuilding.com

So far, my routine has been about 20 minutes on the treadmill, speedwalking. Next week I’ll be starting to jog a bit. Then 3 sets of 12-15 reps of lat pulldown, tricep extension, bicep curl, shoulder press, chest press, leg curl, leg lifts, etc. I’m going to work with the trainer for a couple more leg/butt moves. Gotta get dat bootay! The hour goes so quickly, I think I’m going to start going early and getting my cardio done before the group officially starts.

I noticed after my first time I was SO SORE, like… ridiculously sore. part of that is just #MSproblems, but now I’ve been taking a Premier Protein drink with me and drinking it right after I get back to my locker. It seems to be helping, I haven’t been that sore since!

Guilty! I disappeared! I left for PAX East in Boston in early March and ended severely spraining my ankle. I didn’t get it checked until I was back in Canada because, well, free healthcare, but it was bad. In fact, it’s still not back to normal almost two months later. Oi!

I also had an issue with a bad tooth that went rogue. Dentist said I would need a root canal and to take some antibiotics before we proceeded. Then two days later I was in the hospital on IV meds because it abscessed and my cheek blew up like a balloon. I was in and out of the ER every eight hours for five days and it totally wore me out. Shitty beans.

ALAS! I am still here! Still a little worse for wear, but working on it. What’s new!? How is everyone!?

Meal Planning Night

I hope everyone had a great long weekend! Mine may have been *too* much fun. I had a bunch of company over to celebrate my cousin’s engagement and my other cousin moving to a new place. I made over 100 shooters and we finished all but 14 of them! Needless to say it took me a few days to recover and got me thinking about way that I have fell off the wagon.

I am spending tonight watching a three-part documentary, The Elegant Universe, and making some plans for new meals! I have a craving for fajitas and some good soup. My mom just got back from a week-long trip to the USA and I am hoping to talk her into a Bulk Barn shopping trip this week. That may just be my favorite place to grocery shop. I really wish we had Trader Joes here in Canada. The price of groceries here is also quite high, which really makes eating healthy a struggle. Hopefully, I can find some good sales this week!

Bad Monday is Bad

I’ve had some issues being productive lately, so when I woke up on Monday morning at 4 a.m. I thought, “Great! Let’s be uber productive and do lots of adulting today.” I got dressed and figured I would pick up some McDonald’s breakfast and a coffee to start my day. Nope. I get to my car down in the parkade only to discover that it had been ransacked. I’m in the habit of always locking it, so I’m not sure if I maybe forgot one time, or if they popped the door open, but either way it had been searched. Then I notice that they left the back hatch slightly open, so the battery was dead. I couldn’t really tell if they took anything, apart from the manual that was in my glove box. Who the hell steals a damn manual!?

I had to just walk away. So I called a tow truck to come boost me, and the police to report it, AND the building manager to let them know, and of course post it on my building’s Facebook page to let everyone else know to be aware and careful. All of this happened before 7 a.m.

I ended up getting my breakfast and stopping to pick up headache pills, which I’m so glad I did because the stress of the whole thing is making my MS symptoms flair up and I feel like poop. I’m staying positive and watching movies, Netflix, and then I’m up to it, playing video games. Shit happens, don’t let it get you down!

The Migraine from Hell

If you’ve never experienced a migraine before, you have no idea how devastatingly terrible they are. I’ve been prone to migraines ever since hitting puberty and, man, they really suck. Seemingly coming out of nowhere and sometimes lasting days.

Most recently, I had an on again, off again relationship with a migraine that lasted about two weeks. I KNOW RIGHT!? So much for being productive! I definitely fell of the wagon with the Ab Challenge and Spin Biking. This happens to me every time I put my mind to setting a fitness schedule. *shakes fist* I will be starting up again once I feel back to normal again, hopefully in the next couple days. For now I’m resting up, drinking lots of water, and playing lots of Guild Wars 2.

Do you get migraines? How do you deal with them?

Sunday Coffee & Games

I may be turning into a vampire… My sleep schedule is reverting more and more into the daylight hours. The last two nights I’ve been awake until about 7:30 a.m. and then sleep until about 3:00 p.m. It’s now about 5 p.m. and I just had my “morning” shower, coffee, and am ready to sit down and play some Guild Wars 2 and Star Wars: The Old Republic.

I am trying to psych myself up for being productive tomorrow. I need to get some groceries, stop at the bank, go for a bike ride, and possibly stream some game. It seems a bit overwhelming at the moment, so I am just going to enjoy my lazy Sunday.

Three Fabulous Health and Fitness Apps You Probably Haven’t Tried

I will be honest, most of the time I download something with good intentions and I don’t end up using it. These are three apps that I actually have been using and really enjoying. I hope you enjoy them as well.

1. Fitocracy

I love this one to track my workouts and interact with other people. You can view a feed of everyone, just your groups, or just your friends, and leave comments and encouragement. The group feature is neat to be able to find others with similar goals or interests. I started a group called FitGeek; feel free to join me!

 

2. Hydro Coach

Not only does Hydro Coach remind me to drink water, it is wonderful for helping me keep track of how much I should be drinking, and how much I am drinking. I usually have a really hard time remembering to drink. All of a sudden three hours go by and I haven’t had a drop! It has been over seven days and I’ve hit my goal of 72 oz every single day! I hope it helps you as much as it’s helped me. I believe this one is Android only, sorry iOS folks!

 

3. Yonder

Yonder is really a neat one. It sees your locations and shows you all sorts of neat outdoor activities, everything from walking/running to fishing to off roading. You can set filters of which things you wish to show up. Sometimes I get in a funk of what the heck I should do. I know I want to do something, but what!? This is a great way to get ideas, or discover new local gems, or even great for if you’re out of town!

Semi-productive Thursday? Oh who am I kidding!?

I really planned on having a productive day today… I woke up and was still tired, ya know that feeling of “fog”? Yeah that. I managed to make some amazing Panang curry in my crock pot though.

Mmmm. Not to too my own horn, but it was amaze-balls. I ate so much, it was all I could do to just lie on the couch after and grunt at Netflix.

I burnt the ever living crap out of my thumb last night while making hot chocolate and now I have a nice big welt… It’s finally stopped burning though, so I can focus on other things. For instance, that show “Are You The One” on MTV. Yeah, yeah, yeah, go ahead and judge me!! I love it and I cannot get enough.

Active Lifestyle vs Anxiety

I can’t be the only one with anxiety issues. It’s pretty crazy how common it is; people just don’t tend to talk about it.

I have been finding it difficult to always live the life I want and be as active as I want because of my anxiety. I live in a beautiful area of downtown, right on the riverbank, but I find it hard to make myself get outside and walk, even though I want to so badly! I usually plan to make a loop and stop at one of the cafes on the way and pick up a vanilla coconut milk cappuccino. My favorite time of year is the spring and fall when the air is nice and cool. The past few days have been PERFECT weather for a good walk.

I’m naturally a night owl, especially now that I’m not working I’ve reverted to my natural rhythm of being awake until 3 a.m. I don’t hit my “peak” in productivity until like 8 p.m. and it’s already dark out by that point. It really is annoying… I love the being awake in the early mornings, I love the crisp air and the morning sun, but I cannot wake up early, and if I do, I cannot be productive enough to get suited up for a walk.

Do any of you have similar issues, or suggestions to help get me outside more?

Current Diet / Fitness / Wellness Plan – Starting Out, Starting Over

I recently lost my job and am still searching for something. Instead of getting down on myself about the financial situation, I’m going to start taking the time to make some really big and positive changes for myself. I think I have come up with a good, attainable plan to get me started. Because of my MS, I have to go extra slow (ie starting with ten crunches a day and moving up from there) The biggest thing for me is to keep progressing. Keep moving to the next goal and the next. I ordered a new scale and measuring tape from Amazon that arrived today! It’s hard to really tell if there is progress when you can’t see any numbers. Hopefully, that will help keep me motivated.

Diet, Food, and Drink – I love to cook. One great thing about being unemployed is having more time to prep meals. I have this crockpot that I am sure is circa 1970s, but it works like magic! I made this Detox Lentil Soup and it was fantastic! I have five servings in the freezer to have at a later date too. wp-1484685675384.jpg
Tonight I am making veggie soup with green lentils, cabbage, tomatoes, zucchini, carrots, celery, etc. Yum! I hope I have enough containers for all the left overs haha. (Yes, I have a obsession with fortune cookies. Bulk Barn is the BEST for things like that.)

Another staple I’m become OBSESSED with is greek salad with orzo. It’s so easy to make and full of veggies. I am lactose intolerant so I do not add any cheese. and I’m not a fan of olives so I leave those out too.

Spin Bike – I love, love, love my Sunny Health & Fitness bike. I am starting out slowly and riding about 3 – 5 miles a couple times a week and eventually I’d like to ride four or five times a week.

Ab Challenge – I found this graphic on Pinterest and I really liked the idea. Most of the others I have seen are crazy amounts and really difficult for me to do or even start. This one starts nice and slow and progresses as a good pace. I am doubling up and doing each day twice, aka each day lasts for two days instead of one. Fitness Blender 3-Day Flexibility Challenge – If you have not heard about Fitness Blender, you need to go check them out RIGHT NOW. This husband and wife team are amazing and make these videos in their own garage. I’m currently doing the 3-Day Flexibility Challenge and I think I’m going to run through it a few times. MS causes the muscles to get tight so stretching and pilates moves are wonderful.
